Beyond Lakenheath Village (updated)
I’m told that Lakenheath Parish is the largest in the county; Lakenheath Ward is even bigger! It reaches from the Cambridgeshire border and, taking in Lakenheath and Eriswell, stretches right across to Elveden. Sedge Fen and Undley are of course included in the Lakenheath Parish. It’s tricky because when you say “Lakenheath” there is a tendency to assume that it’s just about the village!

Most of the nearly 9500 residents live in Lakenheath village and the next largest group lives in Eriswell. The original Eriswell was roughly the same size as Elveden, but then when Lords Walk ceased to be part of the USAF base, it gained some 576 homes!

Eriswell shares Lakenheath village’s problems with the B1112, probably more so with the early morning bottlenecks at the roundabout and the turning to Holywell Row. Not forgetting, of course, the squeeze outside the church! There are also issues with the green spaces at Lords Walk which have no provision for children’s play.

Most of Elveden is in a Conservation area, and of course it moved from Brandon Ward to Lakenheath in the recent boundary changes. Confusing…!

Sedge Fen - like Undley - needs facilities, and work has already started on the former Baptist Chapel site. But (if the roads were ever sorted) it is also somewhere where careful development could work well.

You can find all sorts of interesting statistics about us by following the link to the Lakenheath Ward Report, which compares us to the rest of West Suffolk and the rest of the country. Even though it’s not up to date it’s worth a glance, especially the numbers on Crime, Housing and Education.

In so many ways it’s a great place to live with proper Fen country, heaths, woods and forests and some fabulous buildings. Well worth looking after properly!
